Heating up

4/10/2011

It was about 10 degrees in Montreal. That's not so hot. but we're getting there. It was 30 degrees in Malaysia with 80% humidity. That's kind of hot.  But, the really hot thing about the weekend was the racing. For the first time in a long time a change has paid off. Pirellis ripped themselves to pieces just like they were supposed to. I'm not sure how a road full of marbles is meant to reflect well on a tyre manufacturer but it made for good racing. Different strategies all paid off at different times for different people. Hamilton couldn't stretch a long final stint, but Button could and he got  second for his talent. Different cars were running at different speeds so instead of getting into a train and waiting for pit stops, people had to pass on track. Kobayashi does what Kobayashi does best and passed Schumacher every 5th lap. I still can't work out how he constantly ended up behind him though. KERS and changing rear wings didn't make things too easy, they just made things possible.

Everyone is clearly pushing the packet. Red Bull are fast but they can't get their KERS to work, others are getting their rear wings stuck, Ferrari are still working at putting tyres on cars, and keeping  Torro Rosso can't manage to keep the side pods stuck to the car... Things are getting hot. I'm looking forward to more good races. It would be nice though if McLaren, Ferrari or Renault could get it together and turn up the heat on the championship and not just the races.

On the other end of the spectrum you just need to change the channel to the Indy boys to see an example of a rule change not working out. I don't know how long they are going to put up with side by side restarts that take three attempts before they see a green flag for a lap.

Things are warming up nearer to home as well. The snow seems to have given up falling from the sky and I can see half of my lawn again. The barbecue made an appearance last week. And my tickets arrived for the Belgian Grand Prix. Things are getting warm alright!

I am a race fan. I cannot claim to be an expert on anything, but as a fan I am apparently the most important part of the sport. So I assume everyone wants to hear what I have to say.
