And we're off

These are some of the things you expect from a race in Melbourne. There shall be numerous safety cars- At least three. There shall be showers on Sunday but never on Friday or Saturday. The first corner shall be a disaster - at least one car should become air borne or roll numerous times through a gravel trap. No Australian shall ever be allowed to be on the podium - OK this one is guaranteed for life. Cars with KERS shall embarrass cars without KERS off the start line -thereafter they shall be impossible to pass. Pirelli tyres will shred themselves to bits just like they did all winter and there will be a pit stop every 5 laps - car speeds will vary so much that there will be passing galore.

Well we only got one of those. Mark Webber is doomed to never beat his 5th place that he achieved in a Minardi in 2002. A year it should be noted that the weather did what it was supposed to do, the first corner was a wrecking yard, and Ralph Shumacher got 5 feet of air in a Williams. Instead Sebastian Vettel pulled away but didn't disappear into the distance, Hamilton brought a sick looking car home in second, Petrov looked like a pro, Alonso fought all day to come home 4th, and a lot of teammates looked unlucky or just plain average.

It wasn't a great race, truth be told. Adjustable rear wings and KERS combined still can't make a pass stick down the main straight, tyre wear looked a lot tamer than we expected, and most teams ended up about where they usually end up, if not where we expected them to end up. I can't complain too much though. I managed to stay awake in the small hours so it can't have been too dull. Two more weeks and we'll be setting the alarms for the early morning hours again. Hopefully the weather in Malaysia manages to stay on script.

I am a race fan. I cannot claim to be an expert on anything, but as a fan I am apparently the most important part of the sport. So I assume everyone wants to hear what I have to say.
